Copyright, as explained by the WIPO is a legal term used to describe the rights that initiators or authors have over their literary and artistic works. Works that can be understood as copyright range from books, music, paintings, sculpture, and films to computer programs, databases, advertisements, maps, and technical drawings. Copyright law aims to protect the interests of those who initiate or write content, with the public interest in having the wide-ranging access to that content. The copyright law in India is governed by the Copyright Act, 1957 (as amended by the Copyright Amendment Act 2012).

Copyright owners have the exclusive rights to do or authorize the doing of any of the following in respect of a work:

  • To reproduce the work,
  • To distribute copies of the work,
  • To perform or show the work to the public
  • To make any translation or adaptation of the work
